Currently in year 1 we are learning about:      Autumn Term

Theme: Sowe Valley and Me

This term Year One have been exploring the school grounds, their local area and themselves including their families and their bodies.

The children will be pretending to be pirates whilst exploring in order to stimulate and excite the children to enhance their learning further.
Maths: This half term we have been looking at more and less, subtraction and addition.

Why not try some of the Maths games on the Parents workshop page

(click on above link)

This half term in Literacy the children have been looking at traditional tales, we have been sequencing, acting out and retelling the stories of 'Jack and the Beanstalk', 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and 'The Three Little Pigs.'

PE - Please ensure that your child has full kit in school on these days so that we can get the most out of our lessons!

Every Friday homework will be set for Grammar and Maths.

Maths homework may sometimes be set via, if so I will make note of this in the folder.

Please ensure that your child's homework is returned to school by the following Wednesday in their folder.

If you're looking for extra things to learn and do at home, try some of these games:

KS1 Literacy games

KS1 Maths games

Number facts games

Sowe Valley is a reading school and in Year 1 all children read at least once a week to the class teacher during guided reading sessions. This allows their fluency to be monitored and their comprehension skills to be developed. To support your child in making progress this year please ensure that you listen to them read regularly at home.

We have introduced an incentive across the school to encourage children's reading at home. Each time they read at home and have their reading record signed they will recieve a raffle ticket. At the end of term Mrs Carter will hold a prize draw of all the raffle tickets!

Good luck Year 1!

In the news.......

 ‘Pirate Day’ is on

Friday 9th September.

Children will enjoy a themed fun day to launch thier new topic. Children are invited to come to school dressed up a a pirate for the day.

The staff will be dressed up in Pirate costumes too! It doesn't have to be anything fancy, a striped t-shirt and cut off jeans would make a great costume!
