Music

Intent

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • Be taught to sing, create and compose music
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

At Sowe Valley Primary School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. At Sowe Valley Primary School the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our objective at Sowe Valley Primary School is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.

Immersion

  • Every child will have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument
  • Every child will have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument in further depth through peripatetic music lesson offered at the school

  • Every child will hear live music performances.

Every child will have the opportunity to perform with live musicians at an outside event e.g. Young Voices.

This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and Part B: Co-curricular music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

Our school offers the children a range of enriching opportunities within the subject of Music. With input from specialist tutors at Coventry Music, the children are offered the opportunity to learn to play an instrument in further depth through weekly music lessons offered at a small, subsidised cost.

Lunchtime choir/singing club is offered to KS2 on a weekly basis, with performance opportunities for the regular participants. The weekly sessions allow the children to further develop their vocal skills and repertoire – focussing on good posture, breathing, projection, diction and performance skills through singing. We have also added in Makaton/BSL signing to further enhance our children’s experiences. This helps our Choir to be inclusive for all learners and audiences.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

Through participating in the Choir, we are beginning to develop wider performance opportunities outside of school for the children – from supporting the community, to experiencing professional venues such as local Theatres.

At Christmas, KS1 rehearse and perform a Nativity for the school and parents – which is held in the school hall.

During the Summer term, KS2 support Year 6 with their end of year production, performing to the whole school and families – held in the school hall. Year 6 students are given the opportunity to act as sound engineers and support with backstage duties, including set, props and costume design – giving them a taste of professional roles they may wish to partake in the future.

A talent show is held twice a year, where the children have the opportunity to audition and showcase their musical and non-musical talents – with prizes for all who take part and a larger prize for the winners voted in each year group.

Singing opportunities arise during seasonal and celebration assemblies, where children sing with and to the whole school.

In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

In future, we would like to begin offering more of a range of instrumental lessons for children to learn and experience – as well as increase the number of performance opportunities throughout the year, in and out of school.

We are beginning to search for more opportunities for the children to perform in professional venues in and around the Coventry area with Coventry Music and Heart of England Music Hub.
